Badge, brown colour on the front, light gold on the back, and possibly made from brass or metal. At the top is an engraving of a crown and the Roman numeral "IX" (nine). There is a deer's head flanked by fern—fronds. At the base there is a scroll with the motto "KIA TOA" which translates (to be brave and strong). On the back is two small loops.

The 9th Wellington East Coast Rifles was formed on the 17th March 1911 and were mobilized during World War 1 as a squadron of the Wellington Mounted Rifles Regiment. They saw service at Gallipoli and went on to serve in the Sinai and Palestine campaign.
