WHATEVER HAPPENED TO D.W.QUILL
Antique hunting in Christchurch a couple of years ago I was delighted and highly intrigued to pick up a copy of the 6th edition of the Nikau Waltz, composed by D.W. Quill, of the Railway Hotel Otaki. Since then I have seen an earlier copy at the Melody Farm Museum.
D.W.Q, or Billy as he was known locally was billed as the composer of the Dufferin Polka. Probably named for the same person who gave his name to Dufferin Street in Wellington, and an Irish name — Billy's mother was born in Ireland, or from Irish descent, and good catholics, a stained glass windown in the Otake Catholic Church was donated by the Quill family.
