WOMEN'S FORUM SEPTEMBER 25 1993

[Paragraph 1]

It is with some humility that I speak to you today. Like you I was not born when the great struggle for franchise for women was fought and won in this country. I am one of those females who have used my vote at every Election since I turned twenty one — only sixty three years ago! I well remember a fierce argument with a Swiss magistrate before whom I had to cast my special vote while overseas. he was more than dubious about my status and asked my husband if he would permit such a thing and if he were to agree, would he be so kind as to instruct me how and for whom to cast my vote. He expressed considerable doubt as to the right of a female to select the man for herself. He was even more astonished at the somewhat terse response which he received from my husband (the son of a prominent suffragist). I got my rights and emergy into the streets of Geneva in triumph.
