[Letter reads]

The Clerk,
Hutt County Council,
Wellington.

30th August, 1938.

Dear Sir,

Ngatiawa Bridge.

I am directed by the Council to reply to your letter of 10th June re the above.

The matter has been fully considered by the Council and they are of opinion that little, if anything, would be saved by your Council if the Horowhenua County Council undertook the repairs of the bridge only, as their repair gang would have to travel from Levin to the bridge site, a distance of about 27 miles.

My Council would be prepared to undertake the work if all the boundary road in that area was handed over from your Council for maintenance purposes and this Council to charge your Council with half the cost of same.

Some years ago the Horowhenua County Council built a steel girder span at the North end of the Ngatiawa bridge, and although this was a boundary bridge your Council was not asked to contribute.

My Council is of opinion that if your Council were agreeable to hand over the control of the bridge and boundary road to this Council that a monetary adjustment should be made between the two bodies on the cost of repairs to the bridge over the past ten years, and thenceforth the charge should be equal.

It is not practical that two Local Bodies should be carrying out repairs to a small structure such as this bridge and it is hoped that some arrangement suitable to all can be arrived at.

Yours faithfully,

County Engineer.
