Friends in Retirement

NUMBER EIGHT

Waikanae
February/March 1992

MEETINGS:— first Mondays, Baptist Church Hall. 1.30p.m.

A HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all — and I do hope that you had as enjoyable a holiday as I did.

The holiday included some most enjoyable — and several very wet — FiR events. For the only intentional indoors function, the Christmas dinner, the weather, of course, was fine!

the "sun" umbrellas over the tables for the barbeque at Merlin's place were somewhat inappropriate and most of the 47 guests had lunch there but all repaired to the house during the later showers. However, a great day. On the day of the garden visits the weather did its worst but a damp and bedraggled group welcomed a midday invitation from a member to sample his home—made cider before going on to the second garden which could only be seen through streaming windows during afternoon tea with the gardener.

It was intended that the Drop—In afternoon be held in Liz's garden but — guess what? — so we gathered in the house for a pleasant socialising time. We knew each other quite well and had been hoping to extend our friendship. We have 83 members and 14 came. Do you really only want monthly meetings and bus trips? The committee has been trying to make opportunities for everyone to make more friends in retirement.
