A HISTORIC RIVAL?

[First 6 paragraphs]

Waikanae, rich in history as it is, appears to have a close rival in the township and district of Porirua.

In April 1912, Mr Ell, who was then Postmaster General paid an official visit to the town. Owing to an accident en route, his arrival was somewhat delegated. His official address was, of necessity curtailed. Consequently he gave the following article for publication.

"The earliest information in regard to Porirua dates back to the fourteenth century, when Kupe, the Polynesian navigator and first known discoverer of New Zealand, while circumnavigating the North Island, visited the harbour with his canoe "mata—hou—rua" and landed at Waitawa, inside the entrance on the south side.

Here, he is reputed to have left his stone anchor. The alleged anchor for many generations afterwards lay at the other side of the present railway bridge; but recently (1912) it was placed in the Dominion Museum.

Several meanings have been attached to the name "Porirua" the most credibly accepted being that the locality was named after a prominent ancestor of the ancient Ngati—ira tribe, whose body was said to have been cut up and eaten here.

On the body being dissected, the heart was found to be contained within a double cavity, or "Pori", the syllable "rua" meaning double'. The remarkable anatomical discovery was applied to the place of sacrifice and feast.
