Dear Geoff,
NGATIAWA BRIDGE
Just a note to let you know that some startling progress has been made by my mother in researching the history of the Ngatiawa Bridge — in particular she has located the original engineering drawings! These were drawn by the Public Works Department and are dated November 1911. I have arranged for copies, which may be ready next week.
At the Turnbull she has found references to the bridge, and how it was to be financed, in the Hutt County records. Apparently the boundary between the Hutt and Horowhenua Counties was down the middle of the Ngatiawa Stream and therefore through the middle of the bridge. The costs were agreed to be split as follows : Hutt 200 reference to the bridge actually being built, but she will check the Horowhenua County records soon — they appear to have taken the leading role in the construction of the bridge.
Kind regards
Chris Cochran
